Robert Downey Jr. returns to Marvel Studios in the character of Doctor Doom. Marvel Cinematic Universe has revealed details about “Avengers Doomsday,” the latest installment in the Avengers franchise.

MCU President Kevin Feige revealed Downey Jr.’s casting at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday. He also announced the comeback of directing team the Russo Brothers (Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame), who are returning to direct two more Avengers sequels, Secret Wars and Doomsday, with the latter to introduce Downey Jr.’s Doom.

Who is Doctor Doom?

Long-time enemy of the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom is a multifarious, terrifying monster with mastery of both magic and science. After some damage to his good looks, Doom covers his face with a mask; in some comic variants, he intentionally scars himself.

Comic book readers have eagerly anticipated the film adaptation of Doom, one of the most recognizable villains in Marvel history.

Fans of the MCU have also been waiting for Robert Downey Jr. to resurface as Iron Man, but news of Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom caught many off guard. Announcement of Robert Downey Jr’s performance as Dr Doom in Marvel Studios’ “Avengers Doomsday” sent the audience crazy.

Fan Backlash Over Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom Casting Decision

Downey Jr. portrays Victor Von Doom, a comic-accurate character who is a brand-new addition to the MCU, but surprisingly, he does not portray Doom as a distorted multiverse counterpart of Tony Stark.

The announcement was made at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024 by Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, and Robert Downey Jr. After revealing his face, Robert appeared with arms wide open. The hall was filled with yells and cheers. Robert Downey Jr. appeared on stage in Hall H as the new Doctor Doom, the Fantastic Four’s enemy. This casting news sparked a lot of expectation and attention because it marked Downey Jr.’s transition from playing a beloved hero to the complex and identifiable role of Doctor Doom.

Doctor Doom, often known by his stage name Victor Von Doom, is a fictional superhero from Marvel Comics. Doom was created by writer Stan Lee and illustrator Jack Kirby and first appeared in Fantastic Four 5 in 1962. Doom is well-known for his superior brain and knowledge of magic and science. Furthermore, his tyrannical authority over the fictitious country of Latveria is firm.

Moments after the reveal, Robert uploaded an Instagram post about how much he loves his new mask. “New mask, same task” he tags his post. Well, Dr. Doom, the world is ready to see you.
